After nine years of waiting, and holding out hope, there will not be a third Hellboy film.
Early Tuesday morning (February 21), series helmer Guillermo Del Toro took to his official Twitter account to declare the project officially dead, saying, “Sorry to report: Spoke [with] all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it.” The tweet comes just weeks after del Toro held a poll to determine if he would even arrange a meeting with star Ron Perlman and creator Mike Mignola about the possibility of doing another film.
This is sure to disappoint fans of the character, who have been waiting to see the greatest paranormal investigator have his trilogy come to a close, but, for now this is the hand we’ve been dealt.
Perlman, who has been campaigning for Hellboy III for years, expressed disappointment following del Toro’s news. The actor, known for his roles on Sons of Anarchy, Blade II, and Pacific Rim (the latter two also directed by del Toro) played the title character in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, as well providing the character’s voice in the 2008 video game Hellboy: The Science of Evil.
