James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad confirmed on Twitter that Will Poulter will join the MCU as Adam Warlock in 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Poulter, known for his roles from The Maze Runner to The Chronicles of Narnia, Netflix’s Bandersnatch and most recently The Dark Pictures game Little Hope, will play “the perfect human” originally teased in the second Guardians film, and was the center of intense speculation.
In the comics, Adam (first simply called “Him”) played a key role in defeating Thanos and protecting the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos was defeated in (spoilers) 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, so it’s not totally clear which storyline Poulter’s Adam Warlock will follow, but the artificially-created man has plenty of material to draw from. Besides, it’s not unlike Gunn to go off-book (see what we did there?) and create a new story around the golden bro.
Filming on Guardians 3 is set to begin next month, with a May 5, 2023 scheduled release date. With the anticipation high and the story under wraps, the best we can hope for is someone accidentally leaving their script at Tom Holland’s place.
