Today, Sony Pictures and Marvel announced that actor Tom Holland has been selected to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man film.
After a worldwide search for the newest Spider-Man, the 19-year-old actor beat our such candidates as Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), and Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar). Says producer Amy Pascal:
“Sony, Marvel, Kevin (Feige) and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
The yet-untitled Spider-Man reboot will be directed by Jon Watts, another up-and-comer whose thriller Cop Car debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Although the film set to be released in July 2015, a deal between Marvel and Sony Pictures could mean that fans would catch a glimpse of the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
