Warner Brothers gave us a sneak preview of the first seven minutes of the new “Mortal Kombat” movie, and it’s different from a lot of the other Mortal Kombat films we’ve seen — especially since we essentially get the origin stories for Scorpion and Sub Zero.

The new clip shows Scorpion before his change into the undead spectre we know and fight through the game and movie series’. He has a family, and seems like a pretty chill guy. By the way, if Scorpion looks familiar, it’s because the actor, Hiroyuki Sanada has played roles across geekdom, from “The Wolverine,” to “Avengers: Endgame,” “Lost,” “Westworld,” and more.

While we don’t see Scorpion using spectral powers he’s famous for in the video game just yet, we do see him use a knife in a very Scorpion-like way fighting enemies that include Sub Zero.

Unlike Scorpion, Sub Zero is shown with his powers already manifesting, and in the clip he makes it clear he’s been hunting Scorpion, known as Hanzo Hasashi, determined to end his bloodline.

Though we get a taste of Sub Zero’s powers and a look at Scorpion’s fighting style, the clip ends right before two of the most popular Mortal Kombat characters actually get into it. But you can see the rest of it *right now* since the film is officially out. And if you’re not vaccinated yet or don’t feel like going to a movie theater, it’s streaming on HBO Max. I’m excited for it and definitely going to watch it, since this Mortal Kombat looks like a new take on the classic video game and movie franchise.

Let us know what you think of the film, what you liked and didn’t like, and how you think other video game turned movie franchises could be refreshed.
